Coach Bill Peters Drops Puck for NHL Youth Cup Championship Game

Bill Peters, the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, was on hand at PNC Monday to participate in the ceremonial puck drop for the 2007 birth-year NHL Youth Cup Championship game featuring the Carolina Junior Hurricanes and NY Junior Islanders. The Hurricanes practiced right before the Youth Cup game so both youth teams were able to watch the Hurricanes practice under the NHL Youth Cup score board and banners. Coach Peters decided to stay and watch the game and had some very positive post game comments about how well the young players from both teams played.

PW Lower A Win Palmetto State Fall Classic Championship

Jr. Hurricanes Pee Wee Lower A team staged a thrilling overtime win in the championship game, to cap a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Palmetto State Fall Classic in Charleston, SC. Faced with an early 2-0 hole in the final, the Jr. Canes cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the 2nd period. After pulling the goalie in the waning minutes, the Jr. Canes tied the score in dramatic fashion, to stun Atlanta Fire Squirt AA and force overtime.

It didn't take long to seize on their momentum. Just 30 seconds into overtime, the Jr. Canes struck again with the final tally, to complete the comeback and take home the gold in sudden death.

The tournament started with a convincing 10-2 victory over the Carolina Stars, followed by a closely contested 3-0 shutout of the Atlanta Fire. After a 4-1 win over Chilled Ponds (VA), the stage was set for a rematch with the Fire, and the Jr. Canes were equal to the task in their first tournament of the season.

Peewee Lower A now enjoys a bye week, before heading to Montgomery, MD for a three game set vs. the Blue Devils. After earning their first gold medal of the young season, the team's record now stands at 8-3-1.

Congratulations from the Junior Hurricanes organization for a great weekend!

12U Wins NHL Youth Cup in a Shootout vs. Columbus

Congratulations to the 12U AAA PeeWee Major team for winning the NHL Youth Cup in an exciting overtime shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 at PNC Arena. The Canes won a rematch vs. the Blue Jackets after dropping the opening game to them 2-0. They then went on to beat Nashville 7-1, won 6-1 over the Islanders and a 4-0 must win over the Penguins to secure a spot in the final.

The Blue Jackets jumped to an early lead and scored with just 10 seconds into the opening period. Coach Steve Rice said “going down by a goal that quickly into the game could have been devastating, but the boys kept their composure and battled back. They also killed several crucial penalties and overcame adversity throughout the game.”

Kaden Wolitski won the tournament MVP finishing with 7 goals and one assist.

Congratulations again to all of the players and coaches!
